Action Item – Bitly!
Today’s topic is using Bitly! You may know what it is already, but if you don’t… I am still pretty confident that you have seen a funny looking short link that might look like gibberish on Twitter or Facebook and maybe you have wondered what that was. It might have been a Bitly link!
Bitly shortens your links and makes it easier for you to post on social networking sites, but there are MANY other reasons to use a service like Bitly and I have outlined several below. Here is a direct link to go check out Bitly for yourself: https://bitly.com/
Benefits of using Bitly…
– Shortens your links. Helpful for social media status’ that need to be short, especially Twitter. I love to Bitly a Facebook photo (such as a flyer or advertisement) and tweet that Bitly link on Twitter with appropriate text. This gets your message out there just the same as posting a photo on Twitter, but the big difference is that it drives your Twitter followers to your Facebook page, potentially getting you some new likes!
– Ability to customize the shortened link for additional branding strategy. You can edit the short links to include an abbreviation for your band or business, a keyword such as “itunes” or “amazon” to differentiate between download sites, or include a date. It is not necessary to customize ALL your Bitly links, but it can be very helpful with main pages you send out all the time. For example, I have customized bitly links for the tabs on my website and my Facebook and Twitter pages, but I don’t Bitly every single link I post.
– Tracks specific marketing metrics. And this is how you tell how many people are clicking on your links!! If you use Bitly, you will be able to understand where and when your links are being clicked. And what site those clicks came from, such as Twitter, or Facebook, or even Facebook mobile. The best way for me to explain this is for you to just see it yourself.. so click on this link to view the specific stats for one of my campaigns: http://bit.ly/R12uqx+ Anytime you would like to view statistics of a particular bitly link, just add a “+” sign to the end of the link. You can even check statistics for bitly links created by other people! Just copy and paste into your browser add the “+” at the end and hit enter.
– Stores links for later. Bitly can act as a place to store your important links, just like saving bookmarks in your browser, only you will be able to copy the shortlink and view statistics at anytime.
– Bitly Bundles allow grouping of specific topics or campaigns. You can create Bitly Bundles to separate links for different types of campaigns, and if you are a member of different bands, this will help by keeping different bands in different Bundles of links. 100 links per Bundle, I have recently found out. You can also add “curators” to your bundles and let band members add bitly links to your specific bundles!
– Creating QR Codes. Each time you save a Bitly link, a QR Code is created for that link. QR Codes are a whole other topic for an entirely different newsletter article, but I am sure we will cover that in the not-so-distant future!
– Bonus Bitly Tip: Many bands are frustrated that their “Events” tab does not show up on the mobile Facebook application. What I like to do is use a bitly link for a bands main tour date page on Artistdata (click here for more info on Artistdata) and put the bitly link on the Info/About tab on their Facebook page with wording like “Click here to view upcoming shows!”. Since everyone on all types phones will be able to view the Info/About tab, they will see the bitly link for shows and be able to click on it, redirecting then to the Artistdata site and be able to view all show dates with any info you have entered into Artistdata… such as locations, set times, supporting bands, ticket links, even maps to get to the venue! The really wonderful thing about using a Bitly link in this way is that you only have to set it up ONCE and each time you enter a date on Artistdata, then your show listings will be accurate in all places you have them posted on the web.

What I really like about reading his interviews is that they are never just the typical “what inspires you to write the music you write” type questions. Question & Answer
QUESTION: How do I “share” facebook posts by others when I am on my phone?
ANSWER: Good question! I think you are referring to the Facebook Mobile App, where you can “like” and “comment” on posts in your Newsfeed, but the “Share” option is not available. An easy fix is to go to internet on your phone (not the mobile app!) and visit m.facebook.com. Hit “Home”, scroll ALL the way down to the bottom and click the link “Desktop Site” or “View Desktop Site”, now you will be able to see the Share option. There are lots of good reasons to switch between viewing the full Facebook website and the Facebook Mobile App, so remember that is always an option!
